EBM Blog - Champagne corks are popping as the Sydney to Hobart yacht race begins

Summertime and the thieving is easy

The 26th of December 2015 marks the 71st anniversary of the much anticipated Rolex Sydney to Hobart yacht race.

This Boxing Day is set to be one of the greatest races to date as participants across 28 nations congregate on Sydney Harbour to defeat eight-time winner Wild Oats XI.

Starting in 1945, the great race south is approximately 628 nautical miles (1,170 km) and starts in Sydney Harbour at 1.00pm on Boxing Day, December 26.

The annual sporting event attracts more media attention than any other yacht race with the viewing statistics ranking just below that of the Ashes, Melbourne cup and the Australian Open tennis.

However, it’s not all smooth sailing for some. In 1998 five of the luxury yachts sank and a record 66 retired from the Boxing Day race due to damage from a low category tropical cyclone.

Having adequate insurance protected these glamorous yachts from having a not so glamorous repair bill. Even if you aren’t competing in the famous race having the right tailored insurance for your watercraft is essential. If the worst were to happen EBM’s Pleasurecraft Insurance can get you out of hot water.
